TIM ARMACOST: Practicing to be a more Melodic Improviser
What is Melody, and how can I study it? Ways to make melody an element of your daily routine
*** For ALL Instruments***
Tim will cover:
Writes Tim:
"What is melody? I think there’s a need for more melody in today’s music. People are preoccupied with rhythm, which is awesome - it’s the area of the most innovation in the last 20 years - but I think it’s time to pay attention to melody again, to rebalance the vehicle."
About TIM ARMACOST:
Bad-a** NYC tenor player - you may have heard him with the likes of Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Barron, Tom Harrell, Billy Hart, John Patitucci, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Peter Erskine or Roy Hargrove.
Tim is a recipient of the prestigious Doris Duke/CMA “New Works” award. And four of his compositions were arranged by Michael Abene and Jim McNeely and recorded by the acclaimed Metropole Orchestra.
Wynton Marsalis commissioned Tim’s original composition and arrangement, “The Repose in All Things,” which is featured on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s recent recording Jazz and Art II.
He has recorded 14 albums as a leader, performed on more than 60 as a sideman, and has recorded over 100 original songs and arrangements.
Tim's most recent recording, Time Being, feat. Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Bob Hurst, received 4 stars in Downbeat magazine.
A widely respected educator, Tim taught at the Jamey Aebersold and Stanford Summer Jazz Workshops, Queens College in NYC and gave clinics at universities all over the world.

March 7, 2021: ADRIAN MEARS: Jazz Ear Training Vol. 1 (Intermediate) - for ALL Instruments!
Tools to hear what's going on harmonically & melodically when transcribing & performing
Bad-a** trombone player, composer & Jazz Professor (Carla Bley, McCoy Tyner Big Band, Eddie Palmieri & more)
Writes Adrian:
"Training your ear to hear the harmony underneath a melody is something every jazz musician needs on a daily basis.
To identify the tension of a melody tone or a specific interval, whether it's a dictation or something in our ears we strive to play. There are lots of tools we can use but the selection method varies depending on the situation.
E.g. Perhaps the root of the chord is not clear. (Maybe you can’t hear the bass, or it's playing a walking line.) Or you know the melody but not the chords. I will share methods to remember the chords, transcribe solos or just improvise by ear."
+ DAY 2 (Monday!):
March 8, 2021: ADRIAN MEARS: Jazz Ear Training Vol. 2 (Advanced) - for ALL Instruments!
Ways to enhance your listening and combine it with the theory you know - "Intuition & Intellect Hand in Hand"
Writes Adrian:
"Ear training is so important, not just for dictation or transcribing but in composing, arranging and also just being quick at finding solutions when you discover a mistake.
Or learning a song without the music or asked on the spot to play a standard in a totally different key. All the benefits are vital to our musicianship and can definitely get you more gigs…. :)"

* How to manifest and complete an album of original music & why it's spiritually important to do so, especially today
* How to access your many "I"s for objectivity in your music
* Music is a spiritual practice, let it save you!
March 28, 2021: BRAD ALLEN WILLIAMS: The Sound of Good Notation - for ALL Instruments!
How diligent chart preparation can make the music better
Previous attendee: "Very cool & relaxed approach - and great clarity in which the subject was presented!"
Writes Brad:
"A chart is not “music.” It is, however, part of the musician’s in-the-moment process, and thus has a massive influence on the actual sounds being produced. Notation, when done well, makes the player feel confident, relaxed, and engaged. This increases the chances that your music will be played not only with accuracy, but with artistry!
Poor or inattentive notation, on the other hand, stifles creativity—it’s hard for a player to be present when they’re harried and confused. In terms of both accuracy and emotional impact, a few simple notation habits can help you get the most out of your original music."

=> You can purchase access for ONLY the upcoming TIM ARMACOST Live Masterclass HERE SOON.
(BUT: the JazzHeaven EDGE membership (which includes it ALL!) sure is an infinitely better deal. Just sayin'...)
PLEASE NOTE: the fact that the artist roster for the first round of our live masterclasses is (update: was!) almost exclusively comprised of white males is simply a reflection of the artists who responded to our invitation to participate.
We fully embrace DIVERSITY and have contacted and are in conversation with many more artists, incl. fantastic female artists and artists of other ethnicities and we are looking forward to booking dates with many of them the sooner the better!
